“Little dove?” I call out, throwing my keys on the counter when I get home from work. I’m kind of riding high after last night, watching her come apart from my touch then holding her in my arms while we slept, her warm body pressed to mine. It’s been all I could think about during my shift, But now that I’m home and I don’t have a tiny woman slamming into me for our usual greeting, I’m unsettled. “Rory?”

“In the bathroom.” Her voice sounds tight. Different.

“Everything OK?” I move through my cabin, something niggling at my insides with each step I take. Something is definitely wrong. We were closer than ever this morning. Now all of a sudden, I’m sensing a wall up.

“I spoke to Ellie-Mae,” she says when I fill the doorway, finding her scrubbing at the grout in the shower with an old toothbrush.

“You don’t need to do that,” I say, keeping my voice calm as I take in the ferocity of her movements. “You’re not my servant.”

“But I’m your One.” She gets to her knees and I pull my head back.

“What exactly did Ellie-Mae say to you?”

“She said that there’s a Mountain Spirit who calls soulmates to each other,” she fires back, using the toothbrush to point at me. There’s a fire in her eyes that’s swirling with hurt and disappointment, and I feel it all, hitting me in my chest and tightening my throat—a gift from the Call, slowly joining us with every step in our union we take. I can feel her now.

“Ellie-Mae shouldn’t have told you about that,” I say softly, leaning against the doorway. “You weren’t ready.”

“Why?” Rory drops the toothbrush and gets to her feet. “Why shouldn’t she tell me? Why aren’t I ready? And who the hell are you to decide that?”

“I’m your One.”

“So? Don’t you think I have the right to know? Don’t you think I want to understand what’s happening to me? Why I’m so crazy obsessed with you that I can’t think of anything but you? You know, I’ve actually been thinking that I had some crazy survivor’s attachment to you? That maybe I was so desperate for affection that I just flung myself at the first available man?”

“Rory,” I murmur, moving toward her. “You’ve been through so much. We were trying to give you time.”

“I don’t need time, Tate!” She snatches her arm away before I can touch her. “I need honesty. After all, I’ve been through, that’s what I needed. You said I could trust you. You said you cared. But you kept something really important from me. Why? Why couldn’t you just trust me? Am I so damaged that I needed to be treated like a child?”

“Of course not. We were worried about how you’d react to the truth after everything you went through with the Community. Giving you a bunch of information or telling you stories about the mountain would only be confusing. How were you supposed to know what was real or fake
